SMART METERING (source www.gov.uk)

Smart meters put consumers in control of their energy use, allowing them to adopt energy efficiency measures that can help save money on their energy bills and offset price increases.

Benefits of smart meters

You will not be charged separately for a smart meter or for the in-home display. Under current arrangements you pay for the cost of your meter and its maintenance through your energy bills, and this will be the same for a smart meter.

P272 is an Ofgem change to the Balancing and Settlement Code. It aims to make settlement and billing more accurate for larger business energy consumers. This change will affect an estimated 160,000 meters across the UK.

P272 impacts non half hourly (NHH) sites in Profile Classes 5 to 8 (also known as Maximum Demand sites). By the 1 April 2017, all customers with a meter Profile Class 5 to 8, and an Advanced (AMR) meter installed, will need to be settled half hourly (HH).

As this is a regulatory change across the industry, suppliers should implement P272 by the industry-wide deadline set by Ofgem - 1 April 2017.

What is ESOS?

Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme

The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a mandatory energy assessment and energy savings identification scheme for large organisations in the UK. This is to ensure comprehensive assessments of energy use and energy efficiency opportunities are carried out at least once every four years.

ESOS was established by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in 2014 in order to address requirements of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive.

The aim is to cut carbon emissions by requiring large businesses to identify energy reduction measures and make energy savings. Up to 10,000 UK organisations will be affected by the scheme.

For the first stage of the scheme, participants must notify the Environment Agency that they have complied with ESOS by 5th December 2015. This means that if you are required to participate in the scheme, your organisation should have already have been thinking about and preparing for this legislation.
